For our vegetarian and vegan friends out there, it’s becoming easier to find great meat-free options on cafe and restaurant menus (that aren’t just a salad). Whilst we can rejoice in having more choices when we go out to eat, it can still be tough for those of us who aren’t big fans of the ‘fake-meat’ soy options that many places use as the veggie-friendly alternative. If you are craving vegetarian burgers using whole vegetables or house-made veggie patties, check out our list of places to get your fix in Subiaco.
Locals will know that Jus Burgers have an extensive range of healthy vegan and vegetarian burgers on their menu, with options that use whole vegetables as the hero of the meal. Recently, Jus Burgers introduced a tasty new addition to this range; the No-Critter Fritter burger. Using a flavourful buttermilk-fried cauliflower steak as the heart of the burger, stacked together with chipotle aioli, tomato relish and fresh salad on brioche bun, this is a crispy crowd-pleaser for meat-eaters and non-meat eaters alike. Veggie lovers can also try their classic Pumpkin Patch Kid burger, hitting all the right spots with a panko-crumbed pumpkin patty stuffed with melty goat’s cheese, served with pesto, salad and light turkish bun.
Big, hearty burgers have always been a staple on bar food menus, and now you can find a plant-based alternative to accompany your cocktail at Village Bar. The Cool Beans burger is packed with eastern-style flavours, with a juicy house-made patty made from smashed, spiced beans and accompanied by a simple filling of lettuce, tomato, and chipotle mayo. Served up with a side of mouthwatering, rustic fries, head to the Village Bar on a Tuesday after 5pm for Burger Night and give this spiced burger a go.
The Subiaco Hotel
Subiaco’s iconic grey pub on Rokeby Road is serving up a vegetarian burger that ticks all the right boxes for the plant-lovers out there. Their big Backyard Burger uses whole mushrooms, grilled onions, avocado, spicy tomato kasundi and salad. For those of you that want some cheesy goodness in your meal, this burger is topped off with a melt-in-your-mouth slice of grilled halloumi, but can be removed to keep this burger 100% vegan. Served up with a side of chips, pair this meal with one of their classic beers on tap, and what more could you want?
Ribs and Burgers
Arriving in Subiaco in October 2020, Ribs and Burgers have rapidly become a popular haunt for burger lovers in Perth. Their plant-based burgers are packed with meaty textures and flavours, using pulled shiitake mushrooms to create a brisket-like base that resembles pulled pork. The vegetarian Fable Mushroom burger compliments their mushroom-based patties with swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and creamy aioli (with options to replace the bun, cheese and aioli with vegan alternatives).
