There’s something about street food that feels more authentic than ordering from a restaurant. It’s quick, cheap and cheerful and you can watch the food being made right in front of you.
Luckily for us, from Monday to Sunday in the Subi Hotel carpark, you will find two food trucks churning out street food for both lunch and dinner (or an afternoon snack, if that’s more your style). In a collaborative project, Subiaco Street Food organise the daily food trucks, posting on their Facebook each day to let you know which trucks will be there, and the Subi Hotel provides the venue – their car park.
The selected food trucks change daily, so you can go back day after day and find something new. Local favourites include Bahn Mizzle, a Vietnamese street food truck specialising in the perfect Bahn Mi, and Con Pebre, who specialise in Chilean street food. Con Pebre has gained a cult following amongst Perth’s Chilean community due to their authentic cuisine, with a record of selling 300 burgers in one day to prove it.
The trucks first popped up back in April as a COVID-19 project. Due to restrictions allowing only 20 people in the venue, the Subi Hotel had to close its kitchen. Still wanting to provide food to the people of Subi, the idea of outdoor food trucks blossomed, and they show no sign of shutting it down anytime soon. Welcome to the new normal!
