Warm up with the famous winter puddings from Subi’s iconic Chez Jean-Claude Patisserie

For more than 20 years, locals have been travelling from all over Perth to purchase patisseries and cakes from Chez Jean-Claude in Subiaco. Every morning at 7am there is a line out the door – how many patisseries do you form a queue every morning? Once you taste their famous warm winter puddings, now served daily, you’ll understand why.

Every winter, the bakers at Chez Jean-Claude gear up to bake the popular seasonal puddings to meet the demands of sweet tooth customers. The flavours change several times throughout the week, so customers can expect and enjoy a new flavour each day.

According to Erna, wife of Jean-Claude and co-owner, the berry pudding is a crowd favourite, with other flavours including apricot, chocolate and plum, pear, and strawberry. Described as a “more refined bread and butter pudding”, the puddings sells out several times per day, with a freshly baked batch following shortly afterwards to meet demand. If you go at the start and end of the day, you might even be lucky enough to catch two different flavours in a day.

Often mistaken for a classic French patisserie, Chez Jean-Claude Patisserie is actually Swiss, and the only one of its kind in Perth. With influences both from the Swiss homeland and France (who could pass up on their Parisienne rolls?), as well as mastering the typical Aussie sausage roll, Jean-Claude has a truly unique selection. Rounding out their European style is the inclusion of walnut strudel and poppy seed strudel, popular German and Polish pastries.

The simplest of desserts can be the toughest to master, and the proof is in the pudding – you’ll have to try one of Jean-Claude’s for yourself!
