From the Halliday-selected ‘top Australian winemaker’ Larry Cherubino comes this awesome addition to Perth’s wine bar scene, Cherubino City Cellar. Acting as a small wine bar and restaurant, boutique wine store and event space, the City Cellar truly is a one-stop-shop for all things wine and dine.
Walking in, the lights are dim, allowing the skylight and windows to do most the job for a moody, speakeasy-like vibe. Art from Linton & Kay Galleries decorates the walls, just like it does at their Margaret River Cellar Door. At a 50-person capacity, the City Cellar certainly has an exclusive feel, particularly considering that it’s hidden in an old storeroom above Rokeby Road and only accessible by walking through Simon Johnson or up a staircase from the rear carpark.
True to Cherubino’s Italian roots, the City Cellar’s menu champions fresh Italian eats, with burrata & caponata, lentil, gorgonzola and pesto salad; and of course, an antipasti platter notable mentions. Turning to the wine menu, you can expect a hefty number of Italian drops, wines from Margaret River and the Great Southern, as well as Cherubino’s own labels under which he produces more than 70 wines; AD Hoc, The Yard, Laissez Faire, Pedestal, Apostrophe and Cherubino. Tastings are available of course, so you can try before taking your favourite home, or simply enjoy a glass at the bar or on one of the cosy couches.
The space will be home to special cooking demonstrations from the Mother of Larry Cherubino Wines and Subi local, Natalina Cherubino. Born in Calabria, Italy, Natalina has written two cookbooks, La Rocca and Summer in Calabria, and plans to demonstrate how to master some of her favourite recipes. Keep an eye out on their socials for event announcements.
Finally, for events or intimate dinners, you can choose from a couple of cosy, 12-person capacity private rooms separated from main bar, one of which is parted by an entirely glass wall. Events are catered in-house by Michael Adonis.
Cherubino City Cellar is open from 11am-late, Wednesday to Saturday. Find them above Simon Johnson on Rokeby Road (head up the stairs at the very back of the store), or find the stairs from the back via Rowland Street carpark. Bookings for lunch, dinner and tastings here.
