The Regal is gearing up to present its first big show since March 2020: Disney’s upbeat, so-2000s High School Musical.
Showing from October 8-11 at the historic Regal Theatre, High School Musical is being produced by HAMA Productions, the theatre company responsible for sold-out productions of The Wizard of Oz, Legally Blonde and Beauty and the Beast. Decked out with a whopping 62 cast members, producer and CEO of HAMA, Marina Del Basso told us that they opted for a larger cast for a bigger and better impact.
“The normal High School Musical cast is about 40 people, but the big choreography numbers look amazing with more people.”
Whilst some of the original choreography is featured in the production (hooray!), much of the dances have been modernised, intertwined with hip-hop and acrobatic elements. Each performer was required to showcase their acrobatic and cheering skills during their audition, so get ready for some serious gymnastic moves on stage. Plus, you can expect the karaoke set from the film’s opening scene, the Wildcats basketball court and East High banners, in true High School Musical style.
Notable cast members include John O’Hara, a Perth boy who has risen to star status in musical theatre. Having played Coach Bolton in the original, sold-out production of High School Musical back in 2015, John is returning to the stage to reprise his role. John has toured Australia and internationally, with career highlights that include lead roles in the tenth anniversary of Wicked, Jersey Boys, Shout! and Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The show is an all-ages, family event, but we have a sneaky feeling that the teens of the 2000s will be making up much of the crowd to re-live the experience of seeing the film on Disney Channel for the first time back in 2006. For a full synopsis, see here.
